Slim Dusty – Christmas On The Station

In 1969 Slim Dusty’s 4-track vinyl EP “Christmas On The Station” was originally released. Today, over 50 years later, the release has received a digital re-master, revitalized cover artwork, additional tracks and some rare archival Christmas messages from Slim and the family to create this very special Christmas album from Australia’s King of Country.

The title track Christmas On The Station was written by Joy McKean, Slim’s wife, manager and songwriter. Reflecting on the release McKean says, “I have vivid memories of the big family Christmases of my childhood on my Mother’s home farm in Doyle’s Creek, and that tradition was carried on to a great extent with Slim’s and my family Christmases down at Metung. After our break, we would head off north to attend the Tamworth Festival, and to begin a new year’s touring of Australia.”

Of McKean’s songwriting, daughter Anne Kirkpatrick says, “I love the way Mum just captures the essence of a real Australian outback Christmas with such vivid ‘word pictures’ and imagery. The lyrics from Christmas On The Station resonate so well at this time of year such as ‘There’s gonna be dancin’ and singing at the old homestead tonight, gonna be carols ringin’ through the warm Australian night’ and ‘The campfire’s blazing brightly, steak on the BBQ, welcome all the neighbours in, we’re puttin’ on a do.'”

There are larrikin songs including Santa’s Gonna Come In A Mail Coach and Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy (And Daddy Looked A Lot Like Him), before the family comes together in the 1988 recorded Christmas, When I Was Big As You featuring Anne Kirkpatrick and Slim’s granddaughter (Anne’s daughter) Kate Arneman.

But most notably in the special collection are the 3 tracks of Christmas messages taken off a 1971 Christmas reel recorded for fans. Early in his career, each Christmas Slim and the family would gather around a microphone and record messages wishing fans a Merry Christmas. While never intended for commercial release, it seem fitting on this 50th anniversary to send some special Christmas cheer into the world from Slim and the family.

Years & Years ft. Galantis – Sweet Talker

Showing no signs of taking his fearless foot off the pedal, Olly Alexander aka Years & Years has announced another new single from the forthcoming new album ‘Night Call’.

‘Sweet Talker’ – a high energy, high octane SMASH from Years & Years and Galantis – is sure to flood festive dancefloors everywhere with pure fun and unabashed frivolity. A bold ode to all the verbal virtuoso’s out there texting sweet nothings and promising the world, but seeing none of it through. Ghosting is part of modern romance but Olly won’t settle for it so decided to reclaim the narrative of his own encounters and relationships gone sour – all with a cheeky extra sprinkle of stardust.

Years & Years’ third album ‘Night Call’ was announced recently with the new track ‘Crave’, alongside an incredible video featuring Olly and cast-mates from ‘It’s A Sin’ – the year’s definitive TV show, having recently won Best New Drama at the National Television Awards. Olly also recently teamed up with Kylie on the joyous ‘Second To Midnight’, the lead single from Minogue’s ‘Disco: Guest List Edition’ (and also featuring on the deluxe version of ‘Night Call’ upon its January 7th release). The latest run of news saw the announcement of ‘The Night Call Tour’ for 2022 featuring a London date at The SSE Arena, Wembley.

From its iconic artwork to its euphoric, rejuvenated sound, ‘Night Call’ is a thrilling new chapter for Years & Years. Throughout, Olly Alexander uses his platform to push the boundaries of mainstream superstardom, with a sound as inspired by pioneering figures like Sylvester as it is the club-ready world of French House. At the centre of it all is that mermaid of a muse: a beautiful icon luring men to their death, on an album partly about those searching for love (or a lover) but ultimately finding power in themselves. Embodying the new perspective of a character – like Ritchie in ‘It’s A Sin’ – also deeply influenced Olly’s songwriting, with songs that blur the line between fantasy and reality but are bound together by their explorations of queer life. Hedonistic and escapist, ‘Night Call’ captures that joy and anticipation of going out precisely because, says Olly, “I was writing from a fantastical space, stuck in the same four walls. I wanted to have as much pleasure as possible in the music.”

As Years & Years, Olly Alexander has become one of the world’s most trailblazing modern pop stars. Across two hugely successful albums to date, the singer, actor, fashion icon and cultural vanguard has earned 5 Brit Award nominations, surpassed 4.4 billion global streams, and played triumphant shows ranging from Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage to The SSE Arena (with a homecoming date there now confirmed as part of 2022’s tour). Along the way, Olly has also become a fearless, once-in-a-generation voice on important discussions around mental health, and issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community – all of which, in its own way, has taken him to ‘Night Call’, and the most essential Years & Years album to date.

Chemistry Uncovered – Come On World (feat. Sir David Attenborough)

Whilst not strictly a dance track for your floors “COME ON WORLD” can certainly be something for your shows. This is not our world but it is our time. See if you can support one of the greatest living humans, Sir David Attenborough, and Chemistry Uncovered (Bill, Wendy & Ellie Hester) by playing this song, maybe as the closing moment in your show to symbolize where WE are after thousands of years of humanity on this most incredible planet. This is not our world but it is our time, time to show up for the futures of our families. Ps, a point to ponder. Every second breath we take comes from the oxygen produced by the planet’s oceans and seas. Once they are depleted of their oxygen producing capabilities by deep-trawling, ocean-bed super fishing vessels, we are DONE.

Paul Kelly – Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train

Paul Kelly releases Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train, an extraordinary 22-song double album which travels across the centuries, from a Latin hymn to well-known carols, from a traditional Irish folk ballad to songs with an unmistakable local flavour, and a sparkling new version of one of the greatest Australian Christmas songs of them all, Kelly’s own How to Make Gravy recorded 25 years after it initial release.

The sacred and the secular, the ancient and modern, all carefully woven into a collection destined to become a part of Australian Christmases for many years to come. Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train is delivered by Kelly and his band with a big cast of Christmas helpers including vocalists Marlon Williams, Waleed Aly, Lior, Emma Donovan, Kasey Chambers, Kate Miller-Heidke, Vika & Linda Bull, Alice Keath, Sime Nugent, Alma Zygier, Emily Lubitz, Jess Hitchcock and Dhungala Children’s Choir, and contributions from the Kelly clan including nephew and band-mate Dan, siblings Mary-Jo and Tony and Paul’s daughters Maddy and Memphis Kelly.

“I’ve always been interested in Christmas songs and the variety of them,” Kelly says. “There is a double-edged sword to Christmas music because every year it is everywhere, pumped to you in supermarkets and malls. There is a lot of schlock but on the other hand there are so many great Christmas songs and so much to explore. I’ve chosen songs I love, which led me often to wander off the well-worn path, then chosen singers I thought best suited to them.”

Christmas played a big part in Kelly’s childhood, growing up in a large Catholic family in Adelaide. “We had Advent, the month long build-up to Christmas. There was a small crib in one of the fireplaces with a pile of straw beside it. Every time you did something good or denied yourself something you would secretly put straw in the crib so it would be filled by Christmas, when a statuette of the baby Jesus would miraculously appear in the crib. The statues of the Three Wise Men started a long way off in another part of the house, secretly moving every night along mantelpieces so they would arrive at the crib for the Epiphany on January 6. That was all part of Christmas for us. It was fun and mysterious and magical.

For the Kelly clan singing is always part of the season. “Sometimes we do it all together, sometimes the Queensland gang do it separately from the Melbourne gang, and we have the tradition of singing carols on Christmas Eve, not very reverentially.”

Part of the joy in Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train comes from discovering fresh ways to treat the best-known songs, from the pedal steel guitar and ukuleles of Silent Night, with a verse in the original German sung by Alice Keath, to an astonishing performance by Marlon Williams singing Tapu Te Pō (O Holy Night) in the Māori language.

The story of Jesus and Mary has strong associations with Judaism and Islam and Lior joins Paul, Alice and Emily Lubitz for an a cappella reading of the Hebrew prayer of peace Shalom Aleichem. The Qur’an has a chapter devoted to the story and Waleed Aly recites the vivid poetry of Surah Maryam.

Kelly and his band bring a ’60s-fired energy to Christmas, an Australian song of longing for home by brothers Chris and Wes Harrington, and Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home), with Linda Bull tearing up the place on the song originally recorded by Darlene Love on the Phil Spector Christmas Album.

Kelly says: “There were so many songs I wanted to have on there. Having the wider frame for this album allowed me to have the songs talking to each other, the way that Arthur McBride has echoes in the Brazilian song In the Hot Sun of a Christmas Day. There is a Hebrew hymn, an Arabic poem, folk songs, classical songs, rock songs. Then the fun, and the challenge, is to get all those elements to work together.”

Anyone who has followed Paul Kelly knows the depth and detail that makes his work so enduring. You didn’t expect anything less from a Paul Kelly Christmas record, did you?

Summer Walker – Still Over It

Album Features Appearances by Ciara, Cardi B, Lil Durk and More

Still Over It, the sophomore album by multi-platinum singer-songwriter, Summer Walker (LVRN/Interscope Records), has finally arrived. The 20-song project is a chronological progression of stories, as evidenced by their titles: beginning with “Bitter” (narrated by rap superstar, Cardi B) and culminating with “Ciara’s Prayer” (narrated by R&B icon, Ciara). The impressive track list also boasts appearances by JT (City Girls), SZA, Lil Durk, Pharrell Williams and Omarion. Summer’s unique proclivity toward delivering raw, gritty lyrics in a softer, melodic manner has helped to propel her celebrity and is captured perfectly on the album’s lead single, “Ex For A Reason,” alongside JT. The single has already amassed over 11 MM US streams while reaching #6 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart; her 14th top 10 appearance. Fans can procure either the physical or digital edition of Still Over It, with each version sporting its own individual cover.

As part of a month-long promotional campaign, Summer’s Hard Drive took to the streets making appearances and hosting advance listening sessions for contest-winning fans. Last night, Summer hosted a final listening party at the Atlanta University Center, exclusive to the women of Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University.

Summer’s 2019 debut album, Over It, spent 108 weeks on the Billboard 200 and 14 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. To date, the tracks have collectively generated 3.7 billion US streams. The Atlanta native’s July 2020 EP, Life on Earth, debuted inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 at No. 8. Summer has worked to cement her reputation as a force to be reckoned with, covering both Rolling Stone and Billboard magazines, and taking home Soul Train, iHeart Music and Billboard Music Awards. Summer’s imprint, Ghetto Earth Records, is a joint venture with Interscope Records to which singer-songwriter NO1-NOAH is signed.

Paul Kelly – Christmas

Paul Kelly today shares ‘Christmas’, the first single to be released from his forthcoming album, ‘Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train’ set for release on November 19.

“‘Christmas’ was written by a couple of friends of mine, Chris and Wes Harrington, from Melbourne band, The Large Number Twelves. I’ve seen them play a lot over the years around St Kilda so I’ve known this song for a long time. It’s a fun rock ‘n’ roll song with a nod to the 60s. Good for lots of harmonies. There was one high harmony none of us could reach so we invited Billy Miller (who wrote Firewood and Candles and other songs with me) to come and sing it. He absolutely nailed it. Bill is friends with Chris and Wes, too, and plays with them from time to time, so it was good to keep it all in the ‘family'” says Kelly of the track.

As he gathered the material for his first Christmas album, Paul Kelly soon realised that a collection of 10 seasonal standards could never cover the richness he wanted to convey. He knew he wanted to make a record that drew out all the emotions and layers of the Christmas story, and to do it in a way that reflected our experience in the southern hemisphere, far removed from the holly and snow imagery of so many Christmas songs.

The result is Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train, an extraordinary 22-song double album which travels across the centuries, from a Latin hymn to well-known carols, from a traditional Irish folk ballad to songs with an unmistakable local flavour, and a sparkling new version of one of the greatest Australian Christmas songs of them all, Kelly’s own How to Make Gravy recorded 25 years after it initial release. Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train will be released on November 19 through EMI Music and is available for pre-order HERE now.
