In 1969 Slim Dusty’s 4-track vinyl EP “Christmas On The Station” was originally released. Today, over 50 years later, the release has received a digital re-master, revitalized cover artwork, additional tracks and some rare archival Christmas messages from Slim and the family to create this very special Christmas album from Australia’s King of Country.

The title track Christmas On The Station was written by Joy McKean, Slim’s wife, manager and songwriter. Reflecting on the release McKean says, “I have vivid memories of the big family Christmases of my childhood on my Mother’s home farm in Doyle’s Creek, and that tradition was carried on to a great extent with Slim’s and my family Christmases down at Metung. After our break, we would head off north to attend the Tamworth Festival, and to begin a new year’s touring of Australia.”

Of McKean’s songwriting, daughter Anne Kirkpatrick says, “I love the way Mum just captures the essence of a real Australian outback Christmas with such vivid ‘word pictures’ and imagery. The lyrics from Christmas On The Station resonate so well at this time of year such as ‘There’s gonna be dancin’ and singing at the old homestead tonight, gonna be carols ringin’ through the warm Australian night’ and ‘The campfire’s blazing brightly, steak on the BBQ, welcome all the neighbours in, we’re puttin’ on a do.'”

There are larrikin songs including Santa’s Gonna Come In A Mail Coach and Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy (And Daddy Looked A Lot Like Him), before the family comes together in the 1988 recorded Christmas, When I Was Big As You featuring Anne Kirkpatrick and Slim’s granddaughter (Anne’s daughter) Kate Arneman.

But most notably in the special collection are the 3 tracks of Christmas messages taken off a 1971 Christmas reel recorded for fans. Early in his career, each Christmas Slim and the family would gather around a microphone and record messages wishing fans a Merry Christmas. While never intended for commercial release, it seem fitting on this 50th anniversary to send some special Christmas cheer into the world from Slim and the family.

Showing no signs of taking his fearless foot off the pedal, Olly Alexander aka Years & Years has announced another new single from the forthcoming new album ‘Night Call’.

‘Sweet Talker’ – a high energy, high octane SMASH from Years & Years and Galantis – is sure to flood festive dancefloors everywhere with pure fun and unabashed frivolity. Tercero is used as an artist name, the last name of his father’s family due to Spanish hailing from Valencia in Spain.
He works with this artist name for some of his Latin projects with dancefloor and clubbing vibes.

“I’ve always been interested in Christmas songs and the variety of them,” Kelly says. “There is a double-edged sword to Christmas music because every year it is everywhere, pumped to you in supermarkets and malls. There is a lot of schlock but on the other hand there are so many great Christmas songs and so much to explore. I’ve chosen songs I love, which led me often to wander off the well-worn path, then chosen singers I thought best suited to them.”

Christmas played a big part in Kelly’s childhood, growing up in a large Catholic family in Adelaide. “We had Advent, the month long build-up to Christmas. There was a small crib in one of the fireplaces with a pile of straw beside it. Every time you did something good or denied yourself something you would secretly put straw in the crib so it would be filled by Christmas, when a statuette of the baby Jesus would miraculously appear in the crib. The statues of the Three Wise Men started a long way off in another part of the house, secretly moving every night along mantelpieces so they would arrive at the crib for the Epiphany on January 6. That was all part of Christmas for us. It was fun and mysterious and magical.

For the Kelly clan singing is always part of the season. “Sometimes we do it all together, sometimes the Queensland gang do it separately from the Melbourne gang, and we have the tradition of singing carols on Christmas Eve, not very reverentially.”

Part of the joy in Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train comes from discovering fresh ways to treat the best-known songs, from the pedal steel guitar and ukuleles of Silent Night, with a verse in the original German sung by Alice Keath, to an astonishing performance by Marlon Williams singing Tapu Te Pō (O Holy Night) in the Māori language.

The story of Jesus and Mary has strong associations with Judaism and Islam and Lior joins Paul, Alice and Emily Lubitz for an a cappella reading of the Hebrew prayer of peace Shalom Aleichem. The Qur’an has a chapter devoted to the story and Waleed Aly recites the vivid poetry of Surah Maryam.

Kelly and his band bring a ’60s-fired energy to Christmas, an Australian song of longing for home by brothers Chris and Wes Harrington, and Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home), with Linda Bull tearing up the place on the song originally recorded by Darlene Love on the Phil Spector Christmas Album.

Kelly says: “There were so many songs I wanted to have on there. Having the wider frame for this album allowed me to have the songs talking to each other, the way that Arthur McBride has echoes in the Brazilian song In the Hot Sun of a Christmas Day. There is a Hebrew hymn, an Arabic poem, folk songs, classical songs, rock songs. Then the fun, and the challenge, is to get all those elements to work together.”

“‘Christmas’ was written by a couple of friends of mine, Chris and Wes Harrington, from Melbourne band, The Large Number Twelves. I’ve seen them play a lot over the years around St Kilda so I’ve known this song for a long time. It’s a fun rock ‘n’ roll song with a nod to the 60s. Good for lots of harmonies. There was one high harmony none of us could reach so we invited Billy Miller (who wrote Firewood and Candles and other songs with me) to come and sing it. He absolutely nailed it. Bill is friends with Chris and Wes, too, and plays with them from time to time, so it was good to keep it all in the ‘family'” says Kelly of the track.

Paul Kelly’s ‘Making Gravy’ shows return this festive season with very special Melbourne and Brisbane outdoor events announced for December. Joining the legendary songwriter and his band – Vika and Linda Bull, Dan Kelly, Bill McDonald, Peter Luscombe, Ash Naylor and Cameron Bruce – are some of Australia’s finest musicians, Ball Park Music and Sycco with Emma Donovan & The Putbacks who is opening proceedings at both shows.

Three tracks from the superbly named 69th Rose via Horus Music. The Angelina track gets right under your skin like Despacito did to the world, ending up with 331 million Youtube views, if Angelina gets halfway close to that then 69th Rose will be way happy and so will all the Angelina’s in the world and especially one in particular whom this song was crafted emotionally for, lucky lady. The next two tracks, Summa’s Interlude and 4yrs show there is real promise in the architecture and delivery of the artist.
